Planned Gifts to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)

UMCOR is the global humanitarian aid organization of The United Methodist Church, working in more than 80 countries and in the US. UMCOR's mission is to alleviate human suffering, by providing practical, proactive support to the most vulnerable survivors of chronic or temporary emergencies due to natural or civil causes. UMCOR is a division within Global Ministries.

An Emergency Kitchen is set up outdoors where this volunteer stirs a huge pot.James and Barbara own a successful commercial real estate business. They have two passions - their grandchildren and responding to victims of disasters. James has received immense fulfillment serving as chief cook on approximately five disaster cleanup teams over the past 20 years. Recently the couple shared with their financial advisor that they would like to make a significant current gift to UMCOR but have been undecided as to whether they should use cash or perhaps one of their other assets to fund the gift. They were told that they presently had more income than they needed to live on and meet their family's current financial obligations.

After careful consideration, James and Barbara decided to contribute $500,000 to a Charitable Lead Trust that could make annual payments of $25,000 to UMCOR. This will provide UMCOR with $250,000 in total for the ten year trust term. After the trust terminates, the remaining assets will pass to their children to fund their grandchildren's future education needs.
